Your photo is going to be the first impression a casting director has of
you. Photos are probably the most powerful and effective tool that
you will have. If acting is your profession, then a photo is your business
card.
How to Look:
Very simply put, most people will tell you to avoid
clothing with busy patterns. You don't want to wear anything that is going
to draw attention away from your face. Your best bet is going to be
something in a solid color. Wearing something that gently contrasts with
your skin tone can help to draw attention to your facial features. For
Example, a caucasian male wearing a black or darker color shirt prevents
the entire picture from being too light, yet still allows the focus to be
the face.
The most important thing to remember in your photo is to be yourself. Don't try to over-glamorize yourself, just try to
look as much like you do during your day to day life as possible. Jewelry
is acceptable as long as it is subtle and doesn't draw attention away from
you.
Poses:
You should go mostly for close-ups, although it may serve
you well to have some 3/4 body shots as well. The 3/4 body, or "waist
up" shots will show more of your body, while the close-ups give more
detail on your face. You should also take into consideration what kind of
material you plan on auditioning for. This will depend on whether you are
smiling or giving a more serious look.
Some actors have a variety of photos on hand, so they can
select the best one for whatever particular project they are auditioning
for. Try to pick one or two pictures that could be used for virtually any
kind of audition.
