Networking is essential in any kind of business, but even more so for an
actor. The contacts you begin to develop within the industry will
become the foundation from which you will build your career. You've
heard the phrase "It's not what you know but who you know", and
it's very close to the truth. In addition to getting to know as many
people as possible, it's also vital that they know you!
As you develop your contact list you should include as many people as
possible. Don't be so narrow-minded as to think agents and casting
directors should be the only types you should maintain contact with.
This business is such that today's peers could easily be tomorrow's power
players and decision makers. Keep that in mind before writing any
off as a potential future contact. You never know who may be able to
turn you on to a potential job lead in the future.
Your contact list should include people you've worked with, been in class
with, or have a reasonable level of familiarity with. You don't want
someone on your contact list who has no idea who you are if you call or
send a card. This is the major difference between a mailing list
and a contact list. Mailing lists can include nearly anyone,
whereas your contact list will be a smaller subset of that mailing list.
To keep organized, your contact lists should include the following
information for each person:
1. Name
2. Address
3. Phone Numbers
4. Company Name
5. Detailed notes on correspondence you've had with the contact in
the past.
Your contact list is something you should constantly be updating and
"working". Developing the relationship is the first step,
but staying organized and keeping in contact with the people on the list
is what will keep you well connected in the future!
